In January 2001, an earthquake struck the Indian state of Gujarat, prompting many organizations, including the Vicente Ferrer Foundation and Intermón-Oxfam, to travel to the area to provide humanitarian aid and to rebuild infrastructure damaged by the earthquake.
After the Bhuj earthquake, Intermon-Oxfam launched programmes in the areas of education, health and construction. Under the latter section, it promoted the training of more than 500 masons in earthquake-resistant construction and the construction or repair of homes and schools, all of which were planned, built and directed by technicians, companies and local bodies. The total number of houses built or repaired was 1,064 and the budget was 1.7 million euros.
